Greenlands Primary celebrates Global Handwashing Day

The City of Cape Town’s Health Department commemorated Global Handwashing Day at the Greenlands Primary School in Bishop Lavis earlier today.
Global Handwashing Day is an annual global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases.
The City’s Environmental Health Practitioners implemented more than 1 251 health and hygiene interventions during the last financial year, from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023, to educate communities on various health and hygiene risks and preventative measures, which included handwashing outreach activities.
At today’s event, learners were shown how to make their own tippy-taps, which uses minimal water for washing hands.
‘Regular handwashing is an easy way to stop the spread of germs and avoid getting sick. It is important our children are taught the basics of preventing illness and how to keep themselves safe,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
